Smart proximity key or transponder key?
- Smart proximity key
- Stays in your pocket or bag. The car unlocks when you touch the handle and starts with a push button. Usually the most vehicle-specific to program.
- Transponder key
- Has a chip in the key head that the car reads when you turn the key in the ignition. It may or may not have remote buttons.
- Remote key
- Lock and unlock buttons. Often combined with a transponder chip in one key.
- Not the Smart car brand
- This page is about smart key systems. The Smart Roadster vehicle model is not supported.

Smart / transponder key programming: common questions
What is the difference between a smart key and a transponder?
A smart proximity key lets the car unlock and start without taking the key out; a transponder key has a chip the car reads when you turn it in the ignition. They use different programming methods.
Can every smart key system be programmed mobile?
No. Some systems need dealer-only access or cannot be done at the vehicle. We check your exact vehicle and key system first and publish known exclusions.
What information should I send first?
Make, model and year, whether the car is push-button start, whether you have a working key, the key type if known, and the vehicle postcode.
